After some days in Khao Lak we decided to go back to Koh Phangan. The travel agencies around Khao Lak could only offer a tourist mini-bus and the night boat for about 950 Baht. We were really surprised, the mini-bus leaves at 8a.m. and arrives in Surat Thani to catch the night boat at 6 p.m. Because of our experiences travelling from Koh Phangan to Koh Lanta and Koh Lanta to Khao Lak we were not wondering, because of travel agency hopping in Krabi. Curiously, the mini bus seems to need more than ten hours for a tour of four hours.
Khao Lak to Koh Phangan by local bus and night boat Surat Thani
We did not like to hopp on, hopp off from travel agency to travel agency in Krabi for abour six hours. So we decided to organize the journey to Koh Phangan by ourself.
Departure Khao Lak bus station – local bus line Phuket – Khao Lak – Khao Sok – Surat Thani
It took some time to find the bus stop of the local bus line Phuket – Khao Lak – Khao Sok –Surat Thani in Khao Lak.
The bus station in Khao Lak is close to the taxi stop on the main road in centre of Khao Lak.
Surprisingly, the taxi drivers were quite helpful to catch the right bus.
At the Khao Lak bus station local busses to Bangkok – Phuket and Chumpon -Phuket stop as well.
Later we found that a small travel agency close to the bus station shows the timetables and prices of all busses and the ferries and boats leaving at Surat Thani and Chumpon.
While we were waiting, we found out, it’s really a bus stop, not a bus station. We must stop the bus by ourselves, otherwise the bus pass by the bus stop.
With the help of the taxi drivers we stopped the right bus. We paid 180 Baht each from Khao Lak to Surat Thani.
Arrival bus station Surat Thani – local bus line Phuket – Khao Lak – Khao Sok – Surat Thani
Just four hours and some stops e.g. Khao Sok later the bus terminated at the Surat Thani bus station.
Now we have to find the night boat pier to catch the night boat to Koh Phangan. A taxi driver offered a pick up for 200 Baht each. A lot of money for a five minutes walk. We denied the offer and asked for the shortest way and he pointed in the wrong direction. A woman was really helpful and explained the shortest way to the pier.
Please keep in mind: Just the night boats start from this pier.
Night boat pier Surat Thani – night boats to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao
So we went back to the next traffic light, turned right and after a short walk of 600 metres, we found ourselves at the night boat pier and the night boats from Surat Thani to Koh Samui, to Kho Phangan and to Kho Tao in front of us. (Please, zoom into the map, where you will find the streets marked – Surat Thani.)
The rest was easy. We went to the night boat to Koh Phangan and bought the tickets (400 Baht each) at the pier.
Amazingly, we have not just saved about 400 Baht each compared to the price of the mini bus, we have also saved more than six hours being pushed from travel agency to travel agency in Krabi.
