After great dives at Sail Rock Koh Phangan we moved further to Koh Tao.
Diving on Koh Tao – Thailand
Koh Tao is situated in the Gulf of Thailand and famous for the dive spots and a high number of diving schools. Currently there are about 60 diving schools on Koh Tao, which are looking for new students.
We left Koh Phangan by Songserm-Express boat. It took around two hours to get to Koh Tao. We have already organized a pickup from the before, before we travelled to Koh Tao. We hoped to dive the Southwest Pinnacle and maybe Shark Islands on the day after.
However we frustrated quickly all hope. We phoned before, if the diving company planned to go to these dive spots. They confirmed it, in practice, however, things looked different. They could not tell us, when or if they would go to Southwest Pinnacle or Shark Islands.
House Reef Tanote Bay – Calypso Divers
When we arrived in South of Koh Tao, we moved in our bungalow and made plans for tomorrow. We got some recommendations for the house reef Tonate Bay and the Calypso Diving School. So we decided to go there and to dive the beautiful house reef.
The next morning we inquired the price to go there. 800Baht – one way – It was more expensive than to dive at Tanote Bay. So we looked around and to get a better offer. However the price was not changed. Luckily, we found a taxi boat, which was cheaper and faster than a ride on a car. We decided to take the romantic long tail boat going from bay to bay to get to Tanote Bay.
After a great dive there, we looked for another diving school, which was going to Southwest Pinnacle and Shark Islands. Fortunately, Alvaro Diving Center on Chalok Bay changed their plans and scheduled both dive spots for the next day.
Whale shark at Southwest Pinnacle
The conditions at Southwest Pinnacle were difficulty. At the surface the sea was calm, but down in three metres, we could feel a strong current. The visibility was between five and eight metres. The dive seemed to get unspectacular. But then! A whale shark! A whale shark swam above us. Incredible, it was our first whale shark.
The next day we dived again with Alvaro. Unfortunately the weather conditions were getting worse, so we had no chance to dive the both places again.
The next evening we catched the night boat to Surat Thani to go back to Koh Lanta.
